Non Surgical Gum Therapy
Gum disease doesn’t spring up overnight, it progresses slowly and chronically, in many cases, you may not even realize you have it. Left untreated gum disease can lead to larger issues, including tooth loss. Should your dental visit indicate the presence of gum diseae, our office will develop an appropriate treatment plan depending on the disease’s severity. Our office may recommend more comprehensive therapies that move beyond the surface of the teeth and below the gum line. Curettage or root-planing may be suggested with specific medications administered at the disease site.
Curettage is the procedure where diseased soft tissue is removed from around the tooth. Removing diseased tissue allows proper healing to occur by removing a source of chronic infection.
Root-planing involves removing and smoothing microscopic amounts of the tooth’s root surface. Once complete you are left with a clean, bacteria reduced surface that promotes optimal healing of the soft tissue surronding it.
Often currettage and root planing are done at the same time by our skilled hygienist. Local anaesthetic is often suggested and used as a way to minimize discomfort. Over your next several visits, we will assess the current state of gum disease and determine if additional steps are necessary. We may recommend a consultation with a periodontist who specializes in gum disease-related surgery.
